I believe that everyone has an inner compass, whether we have accessed it or not, it’s there. It’s our true self, our most authentic place of being. When we were children, people would ask us “what do you want to be when you grow up? Now, as an adult they may ask “what do you do for a living?” The question has changed from what do you want to “BE” to what do you “DO”. There was a great shift from BEING to DOING.
How I see it, the “doing” part focuses on our success, our goals and activities in work, where as the “being” part zeros in on our intuitive self, our passions and values, and what makes our heart happy.
What is your true inner compass? We may start to answer this question with creating a list. The list is not a “to do” list, but a “to be” list. We spend so much of our day “doing”, let’s try to shift gears and spend part of our day “being”.
Ask yourself some questions to get this “being” list started…
What really matters most to you?
Do I start my day with an intention?
How would I like my day to unfold?
What would I like to give my attention and focus to today?
What brings me joy?
Do I feel a sense of balance in my life?
What makes my heart happy?
What is my usual state of mind while I’m at work?
Am I listening to that inner voice and following my intuitive sense?
What kind of person do I wish to be?
What activities or moments in my life are truly meaningful to me?
These questions will help you to reflect on what’s truly important in guiding that life energy that may have been suppressed by all of the “doing” we are exposed to on a daily basis. We can still thrive in our “doing” mode by instilling some of the “being” traits to our life’s work.
Work then may become more meaningful and have a new sense of purpose when we are more inspired by our own inner compass.
